Before you read your story

A quick orientation to Zodiacal Releasing, the timeline underneath everything else in this reading. Come back to this tab any time something feels unfamiliar.

① A timeline of your life

Zodiacal Releasing (ZR) is one of the great predictive techniques of Hellenistic astrology. It takes your birth chart and turns it into a timeline, like pressing play on the chart you were born with. It shows which themes, houses, and characters (planets) are most active in any given stretch of your life, so you can see, at a glance, what part of your story you're living through.

ZR won't tell you exactly what will happen, but it will tell you the quality and the subject of the chapter you're in, so you can meet it with the right expectations instead of being blindsided by it.

② Your team: sect, and the benefic & malefic of sect

Before we can read any period's tone, we need to know your sect, whether you were born in the day or at night (by where your Sun sits relative to the horizon). Sect sorts the planets into two teams:

  • Day charts are led by the Sun, with Jupiter and Saturn on the team. Your benefic of sect (your biggest ally) is Jupiter; your malefic contrary to sect (your toughest teacher) is Mars.
  • Night charts are led by the Moon, with Venus and Mars on the team. Your benefic of sect is Venus; your malefic contrary to sect is Saturn.

Whenever a period is ruled or touched by your benefic of sect, expect real ease, support, and things going your way.
Your malefic contrary to sect tends to bring the more challenging, effortful chapters, but even those are almost always workable rather than catastrophic; think overcomable obstacle, not doom.

Sect is the single biggest ingredient in a period's tone, so it's important to know your team before you read anything else.

③ Two lenses: Fortune & Spirit
  • Releasing from the Lot of Fortune reveals the timeline of your circumstances and your body: the terrain you'll be moving through at a given time, the cards the universe is dealing you.
  • Releasing from the Lot of Spirit shows the timeline of your life's work and direction: what you're called to do, how you play the cards you're dealt.
  • We can look at Fortune + Spirit timelines side-by-side to get a sense of the terrain AND how you're called to move through it, a complete picture of the energy of a given moment (see the Spirit & Fortune tab).
④ How to read zodiacal releasing timelines

In a Zodiacal Releasing timeline, you will see L1, L2, L3, and L4. L stands for level. Each level zooms in on the one before it, and every level is happening at once; you are always inside all four simultaneously, like a nesting doll.

Distinguishing the levels helps if you think about your life like a book, as seen in the graphic below. In a given chapter (L1), you'll have many pages (L2), which contain several paragraphs (L3) and sentences (L4). Notice how even at the sentence level, that sentence is still part of the paragraph, page, and chapter holding it. The same is true of your timeline: a rough sentence can sit inside a wonderful chapter, and a wonderful sentence can sit inside a demanding paragraph. Nothing on a lower level ever overrides what the higher levels promise; it just adds texture to it.

⑤ A real timeline, annotated

Below is a real ZR table (this one releases from the Lot of Fortune). It looks like a lot of numbers, but you only ever need to do four things with it:

Example Zodiacal Releasing timeline table
  1. Begin by choosing the L1 you want to look at; then, read left to right. Each of the four Level blocks (L1, L2, L3, L4) has its own sign column and its own age/date column, running in parallel. Once you click on the L1 you want to examine, all the L2, L3 and L4 periods contained within will populate.
  2. Each Zodiac sign and date is the beginning of a date range.  In the example below, March 31, 2004 begins a Virgo L1, which runs until Dec 17, 2023, at which point we move to the next sign of the zodiac (Libra).
  3. To interpret what a particular phase will be like, always go back to your birth chart. ZR is always read in the context of your birth chart. A Level 1 Virgo period doesn't mean much on its own; we still need to know which house Virgo occupies for you, what other planets sit there, where Virgo's ruling planet is, and what shape that planet is in. This tool does that translation for you automatically in the Soul Story Subplots and Spirit & Fortune tabs.
  4. Watch for the +. A plus sign before a date marks a peak period, one of the busier, more active chapters we talk about in the Soul Story Subplots tab.
  5. Watch for the *. An asterisk marks a loosing of the bond, a rarer, bigger turning point where the ruling planet hands the baton to a new one partway through a long period. It's a plot twist worth noting whenever you see it.
PEAK PERIODS & ANGULAR TRIADS
  • Wherever your Lot of Fortune sits, every sign that shares its modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) becomes a peak period: a busier, more active chapter.
    • One important reframe: peak doesn't mean good, it means active, busy, at the center of things. It can be wonderful, demanding, or both at once.
  • The sign right before a peak is the preparation (things building); the sign right after is the follow-through (things integrating).
  • That three-part rhythm–build-up, crest, integration–creates 4 angular triads which reveal subplots of your soul's story. Hence, why this tool is called the soul story subplot.
  • Think of it like this: your birth chart reveals the themes, motifs, and kinds of characters im your soul's story. Zodiacal turns the birth chart into a timeline, revealing how the story unfolds. The angular triads are a way to take a closer look and discover the soul story subplots–those mini-quests that we cycle through again and again.
ABOUT TONE SIGNIFICATION, READ THIS ONE TWICE!

Each period is tagged with a tone (favorable, mixed, surmountable, difficult, or quiet), based on the objective testimony of your chart, mainly which of your team's planets is in charge, and how supported they are. Hold this loosely. It's a weather report, not a verdict.

A period tagged "difficult" is not a life sentence. There is real treasure, growth, and even joy inside the hard chapters. Conversely, an "easy" period can still feel like a lot. No single word captures the richness of a lived chapter, so use the tone as a starting orientation, then trust your own experience above it.

Spirit & Fortune, side by side

Your Fortune and Spirit ZR timelines run at the same time, and seeing how they interact can be incredibly illuminating.

Remember:
  • Spirit is what you do, mind, action, agency, vocation, released from {{ converge.spiritStart }}.
  • Fortune is what life hands you, body, circumstance, the stage you act upon, released from {{ converge.fortuneStart }}.
Read them together to see how your intention and your conditions move in and out of phase.

Both timelines released whole-sign on 360-day years (30-day months). Convergence = the same whole sign activated on Spirit and Fortune at once (shared-sign) or both timelines in a peak period together (twin peak).
